Gale Zellweger was unanimously approved by the Scranton city council to fill a vacant seat at their Dec. 15 meeting. He was the only applicant and will be sworn in at the January meeting. Zellweger has previous experience as a council member, serving several years ago.
He will replace David Dideriksen who resigned at the Nov. 8 council meeting. Zellweger will serve until after the 2023 election.
The council voted to change the meeting time each month to 6 pm. Previously the time was 6:30 pm.
A change was made in the ordinances in relationship to the members of the Scranton Community Center board. The board is composed of seven members, residents of the city or neighboring townships. The mayor or a city council member will be one member. The remaining six members will be appointed by the mayor. One of the six must be a member of the Scranton Alumni Association board of directors.
City employees will be responsible for snow removal at the United Methodist Church parking lot. The UMC will pay $50 for snows of six inches or less and $100 for snow totals above that depth.
Zach Sukovaty was authorized to haul away debris at the city burn pile at an estimated cost of $3,750. The bid of $2,100 to remove 12 stumps of ash trees cut down by city employees was approved. Muir Tree Service will do the work. The council approved the purchase of a web camera for future online classes. City lots will be surveyed in looking ahead as a potential location for a post office.
Mayor Jerry Boyd provided the public works report. Monthly samples are completed, the wells were switched, snow fence was erected, plow maintenance completed, sand truck is ready and some concrete work was completed prior to the change in weather.
